Strangers are just friends you haven’t met – Marie

It wasn’t just that she had an amazing tattoo but the freaking art was on her bald head!! The photographer in me wanted to jump up and click her photo but I am what they call (politely) a chicken. Approaching a complete stranger and such a striking women at that – unnhhunhhh, I might as well cut my arm rather than put myself out there.  If there is one thing that stops me from becoming a street photographer – its my total and utter shyness. This was one of the biggest block I was fighting against and always lost.  So many times I have taken my camera to Orchard road to click “the strangers in my city “- roamed for hours and come back not having taken a single photo – cause I could not approach a single person. But fortune was on my side the day I saw Marie, a good friend was with me and he all but kicked me to go and approach her.

My heart was pounding and I dont know how my legs carried me but some how there I was standing in front of her putting on a oscar worthy performance of “not-afraid”. The first thing I do is give her my card and pointing to Anu’s photo on it blurt out “that is my wife” (as if having a wife was going to make me sound less of a creep – doing what i was doing!) Somehow after the first few words were out of my system I felt courage trickling in and managed to convey the fact the I was a photographer and would love to photographer her.

Although full of myself for actually having “grown a pair” ( as wifey eloquently put it when I told her of the incident), I wasn’t really expecting to hear from Marie again. But the Facebook Gods smiled at me with a message notification in a few days and we arranged for a photoshoot.  Marie later tells me she did massive internet search on me, talked to her boyfriend and arrived to the conclusion that I wasn’t really a creep (phewwww :))

Marie is a photographer herself and it was her first time in Singapore to showcase her work.  Not only did i get to photograph her but also had a chance to see her work which was truly inspiring.
